Tukums is 70 km west of Riga, on the River Stocene in Latvia. The town has 21,400 inhabitants, roughly the same as Visby. Tukums District may be said to correspond to a Swedish county.

Gotland Municipality and Tukums District have been twins since 1991. The agreement was signed in May 1992. The cooperation, in large measure initiated by non-profit associations and private enthusiasts, centres around responsibility for our shared environment and the exchange of knowledge and culture.
