Collaboration between Municipality of Gotland - Culture & Leisure Dept. and Novgorod Summary activities during 1990 - 2000

Exchange of idea and know-how between the libraries in Novgorod and in Visby 1994 - 1996.

Gotland's County museum exposed an exhibition from the Historical museum in Novgorod with medieval objects from Novgorod and Starja Ladoga. During October 8 to March 5, 1995.

Senior high school in Gotland "Säveskolan in collaboration with Gotland College of Higher Education. The college has since several years established exchange of students in Russian language and are involved with archaeological projects in Novgorod.

Municipality of Gotland co-ordinated the network Hanseatic leagues actions to Renovate the Cathedral of S:t Nicolaus in Novgorod. Restoration work lasted during 5 years. Inauguration of the Cathedral on 15th June 1999 at the celebration of Novgorod 1140 years anniversary. In conjunction to the festivities a cultural delegation from Gotland participated. From Sweden representatives from SIDA "Swedish International Development co-operation Agency" handed over two Millions America dollars for projects in the Novgorod region. Project concerns municipal administration and social care.

Novgorod makes its own medieval festival "Gardarike June 12-14 1999 and invites Gotland to take part. Film on Gotland makes medieval festival video to document the event.
All invited participants had to line up ideas on future collaboration topics with Novogrod and send it to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs / Secretariat for East and Central Europe, and the Swedish Institute. A new meeting may be arranged during 2000 concerning "Gardarike".
